MARGAO

Margao Municipal Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar has replied back to the Goa Waste Management Corporation stating that the Council has already taken steps for improving treatment capacity at the site, drawing attention of the Corporation that the Council has installed and commissioned a 10 TPD gasification technology-based waste treatment plant at Sonsodo with effect from 23/04/2026.

The MMC Chief Officer further pointed out that the Council intend to set up the process of setting up a 50 TPD wet waste processing/disposal facility at Sonsodo, so as to ensure that the Council develops its own sustainable waste treatment infrastructure and reduces long-term dependency on interim arrangements.

The Chief Officer, however, did not elaborate on how the Civic body would go about setting up of a 50 TPC waste processing facility at Sonsodo.

The MMC Chief Officer’s claim that the Civic body has commissioned a 10TPD gasification plant at Sonsodo has come under lens for the simple reason that the gasification plant is meant to treat only dry waste including sanitary waste and has no provision for the treatment of wet waste generated in the city, pegged over 30 tonnes per day.

This implies that the MMC is yet to set up a dedicated wet waste treatment plant at Sonsodo till date.
