The Margao Municipal Council resumed its anti-encroachment drive in the city, with Municipal works confiscating goods and items displayed along footpaths and public passages.

Chief Officer Siddivinayak Naik, who led the operation along with the Accounts and Administration officer Damodar Elekar, has pegged the market value of the confiscated goods to a whopping Rs 3 lakh.

Owners of the business establishments, whose goods were confiscated on Thursday, came rushing to the Municipality in the evening and were seen pleading with the officials for release of

the goods upon the payment of fines.

With the Margao Municipal Council yet to enact a bye-law mandating the Municipal officials to auction the goods, the Municipality had been following the same old practice of returning back the goods to the owners after payment of fine, raising questions about the effectiveness of the anti-encroachment drive.
