The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday deputed five teams to recover arrears from all 25 wards in the municipality
According to MMC administrator Gurudas Pilarnekar, teams of 6 members each have been set up to cover all wards.
"We have a large number of outstandings to be recovered and hence, we have set up these teams to collect and recover all dues, including tax, rentals and lease.”
“We have given these teams all powers and authorised them to issue notices and make the recoveries of outstanding dues. The major recoveries are from oil tanking companies and we have begun the process for these major recoveries.”
“These companies are also in favour and as per court order, we will try and see some settlement from these companies.”
Stating that handcarts were removed from footpaths, Pilarnekar said the MMC was not against the business, but handcarts were cleared because they were encroaching on footpaths and roads, causing traffic issues.
"We are not opposed to the business and we are not against anyone's livelihood, but having a handcart on footpaths, roads, footpaths is not acceptable because this will block traffic and create chaos.”
“Businesses should be carried out with discipline and not by blocking footpaths and causing inconvenience to others. We will put things in system,” said Pilarnekar
