The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued a public notice declaring the fish markets owned by the Council at Baina and Vasco da Gama as ‘Notified Fish Markets’.

The notification, dated September 11, states that any activity of selling or storing fish within a 1-km radius of these notified markets shall be prohibited and treated as illegal.

The Council has clarified that this action is in line with Section 252 of the Goa Municipality Act, 1968, as amended, and Bye-Law 2(iii) of The Storage or Sale of Flesh or Fish Bye-Laws, 1971.

This decision stems from a resolution passed in the Special Council Meeting held on May 9, where the MMC resolved to notify the fish markets at Baina and Vasco as notified markets with immediate effect.

The notice, signed by MMC Chairperson Girish A Borkar and Chief Officer Siddhivinayak S Naik, also supersedes all previous notifications issued on the subject.

Residents within a 1-km radius of the markets who may have objections have been called upon to submit them in writing within seven days from the date of publication of the notice.
