For eight long years, their efforts had been flushed down the drain but constant pressure from locals and recent political movements finally got the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to answer public call and set in motion the work to construct a 10-seater community toilet in Mangor-Vasco.
MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar launched the project in the presence of Councillor Pascoal D’Souza and former minister Jose Philip D’Souza.
The project has been widely welcomed by locals in Mangor as they have been demanding a community toilet since the past eight years.
“The only public toilet in the area was in a very dilapidated state and was out of order for eight years. With no toilet facilities, the locals had been put to a lot of inconvenience,” said a source. “The demand of a new toilet in the area had been made by residents to Ward Councillor Pascoal D’Souza and he had raised the issue on several occasions in the MMC.”
“However, the work on the new toilet finally took shape after the ruling panel was voted to power and D’Souza became a part of the ruling panel,” said the source.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the toilet would be built at a cost of about Rs 9.15 lakh and would be ready for use in about two months.
Gaonkar informed that new toilet facilities would also be taken up in two other wards.
“This toilet at Mangor was the need of the hour as the previous toilet was in a dilapidated state and was out of order for over eight years. The ward councillor had been demanding this facility for many years but since he was in the opposition, the works never materialized.”
“When we realized that a toilet was not present in the area, we took up the proposal immediately. The toilet will be a 10-seater community toilet block and we have requested people to take good care of the facility once it is ready.”
“The facility will be ready in two months. As it is a slum area it will take some time,” Gaonkar added.
