The Margao Municipal Council on Thursday inaugurated a security gate, CCTVs and a bailing machine at Sonsodo, even as all the three machines installed by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to remediate the Sonsodo legacy dump remained idle as the civic body was yet to fix the land issues over
the disposal of the remediated waste.
A visibly agitated Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai told MMC Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar to ensure that red tape does not choke the remediation project, making it clear that while the security gate, CCTV cameras and the bailing machines are no doubt welcome and important, the civic body should not lose sight of the main remediation project.
As the MLA found all the three remediation machines lying idle at Sonsodo, Sardesai said the chief officer should try to put an end to the meetings that have been held to resolve the issue.
In fact, he said the meeting with the district Collector, South scheduled
on Thursday evening turns out to the last meeting on the issue and hoped that
the matter does not reach the office of the Chief
Secretary.
Saying that the MMC and GWMC has just five months left now to remediate the waste before the onset of monsoons, with one crucial month wasted just on the finalising of land to dispose of the remediated waste, the Fatorda MLA has made available the vacant land adjoining Sonsodo for the temporary storage of the RDF. He said the issue over the disposal of the inert waste can be resolved by dumping the same for land filling on the MMC acquired land for parking at old market.
“When the MMC owns land at the old market, which requires land filling, the civic body should not waste any more time to take the inert non-hazardous waste to the old market. I think we should start disposal of the inert waste to the MMC land today itself,” he told the Chief Officer.
