MMC makes case for re-implementing system of deposit against bottles

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Monday dashed off a letter to the Excise Commissioner, Director of Weights and Measures, Director Food and Drugs Administration, President, All Goa Liquor Traders’ Association on re-implementing the monetary deposit against liquor bottles sold by the outlets.

Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik said one of the issues noted during the execution of waste segregation of municipal solid waste under MSW Rules 2016 is that the civic body has come across large number of glass liquor bottles mixed with garbage. Moreover, he pointed out that glass bottles have choked the storm water drains and the natural flow of water, adding, “In the recent desilting of nullahs undertaken by this council, bottles were found in the drains.” “Upon investigation, it is realized that in the past the liquor companies had sought monetary deposits against bottle sold which was later refunded upon returning the empty bottles. This had served twin purpose of optimal use of bottles and less garbage collection,” Naik said, while requesting the authorities to reintroduce this scheme in entire state and help the local bodies in their endeavour to keep the state clean.
