MMC to hire labourers for pre-monsoon works

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday decided to hire additional labourers to carry out the pre-monsoon works in the municipal wards, while also deciding to regularise the illegal houses within the municipal area.

During the ordinary council meeting, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said the council wanted to hire about 30 daily wage labourers to carry out the pre-monsoon works, but since the remuneration was less, the workers had refused to accept the work.   
“We had offered Rs 300 for each labourer; however, the amount was less and no one came forward to take up the pre-monsoon works. We then requested the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) to increase the daily wages to Rs 500 per day and the DMA agreed. We will soon appoint about 30 daily wage labourers and carry out the pre-monsoon works,” said Naik.   
The MMC also decided to regularize the illegal houses within the municipal area and has imposed a fee of Rs 1,000 per house, with the councillors unanimously agreeing to the proposal.
