MARGAO
Winds of change seem to be blowing in the BJP-controlled Margao Municipal Council as the Vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal has submitted her resignation to Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
While confirming that Deepali has submitted her resignation papers to his office, the Margao MLA said that the resignation will be forwarded to the Director of Municipal Administration as per the procedure.
Incidentally, a couple of ruling BJP Councilors are believed to have called on the Margao MLA at his residence on Tuesday morning to discuss the change in leadership vis-Ã -vis the post of Vice-Chairperson.
Deepali’s resignation assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that a group of ruling BJP Councilors had called for a change in the MMC Vice-Chairperson on the ground that she has been presiding over the post since 2021 when the alliance between the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai had stormed to power in the Civic body in the 2021 Civic polls with a comfortable majority.
As per the understanding arrived by Kamat and Sardesai, the Goa Forward-backed Chairperson Lyndon Pereira would occupy the post for 15 months and step down to pave the way for a candidate from the Kamat panel to take over the reins of office.
Incidentally, when Lyndon had tendered his resignation as per the understanding, vice-Chairperson Deepali too had submitted her resignation to the Margao MLA, but the resignation was never forwarded to the office of the Director of Municipal Administration.
With no green signal coming from the Margao MLA to step down from office, Deepali continued to occupy the post, causing resentment amongst a section of the ruling Councilors who had set their eyes on the vice-Chairperson’s Chair.
