The Met Department on Wednesday said that the monsoon would take longer to hit Goa, because of Cyclone Vayu. The further delay is expected to be short, by a day or two longer. However, it will take the Department till June 13 (today) to assess the situation properly, Director of the Goa center Dr KV Padgalwar said.

The delay in the monsoon is due to Cyclone Vayu taking away all the moisture over the Arabian Sea, said Padgalwar. The current conditions are not favourable for the monsoons to progress to Goa. Currently, the Southwesterly winds are hitting Goa and the monsoon has not progressed beyond South Kerala, he said.

About the path of Cyclone Vayu : the Met Department’s Doppler Radar detected that Vayu passed parallel to Goa on Tuesday evening between around 5:00 and 7:00 pm. As of Wednesday, the position of the cyclone was parallel to Bombay. A severe cyclonic storm is expected to hit the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Diu, west of Veraval with a wind speed of 145-155 kilometers per hour, gusting at 170 kilometers per hour on the morning of June 13 (today.)

Meanwhile, North and South Goa received an equal amount of rainfall between June 11 and 12, with Ponda receiving the highest rainfall at 56 mm. Margao recorded 51.3 mm of rainfall.
