A Manohar International Airport (MIA) worker caused chaos and disrupted services at Dabolim Airport on Saturday evening after he was found to have made a hoax bomb threat by phone. He was later arrested in the connection.
According to police reports, a call was made on 112 at 4.45 pm stating that a bomb blast may occur at the Airport. The specific location of the Airport was not mentioned and so, Goa Police in coordination with CISF intensified security measures at both the airports at Dabolim and Mopa.
“Since, the caller did not specify any airport, security was beefed up at both the airports. Teams from the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), Bomb Disposal Squad said and a Police Dog Squad was dispatched to both airports” said the source.
At Dabolim Airport, the hoax call created chaos and tension as a strong security presence made its way to the airport and all movement of taxis was immediately stopped.
A Mopa Police team was directed to trace the caller, who was later identified as Kundan Kumar (22) of Bihar, who is working as a helper at the MIA.
On questioning, Kumar is reported to have confessed having made the hoax call and was in an inebriated condition. He was later arrested under Sections 505(1)(b), 506(ii) and 507 registered at the Mopa Police Station.
When contacted, Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh said all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) had been in place for any security threat at the Dabolim Airport.
Meanwhile, a Fire Brigade also rushed to the Dabolim Airport.
“We also received a call from Margao police station that a call was made regarding a bomb being placed in one of the airports and we rushed to the Dabolim Airport,” said a fire official.
