PANAJI

Two more small pieces of possibly a stone sculpture got dug out during excavation work being carried out at a 'Smart City' work site near the Hindu Pharmacy on Thursday.

The two small idol pieces are yet to be identified by experts from the Archeology and Archives department.

This follows the discovery of a stone sculpture suspected to be of the Paulist missionaries as it has striking similarities to sculptures known to exist in Siridao and locally called 'Paulists'.

The sculpture could possibly have reached Panaji from Old Goa when the Portuguese abandoned it and built a new capital here.

There are historic records to show that a lot of the masonry and materials were shifted from Old Goa to Panaji when the latter was being spruced up as the new capital of the Portuguese.

Official comments from the Archeological department however are still awaited on the idol found on Tuesday and the pieces found on Thursday.

However, according to reports the pieces of idols would be sent for expert opinion for details about date and other information.
