Rains continued to lash the state with the meteorological department reporting that the south west monsoon has been active over Goa and Konkan and is expected to continue at least up to Sunday September 24.
Pernem was the major beneficiary of rainfall over the past 24 hours receiving 18 cm of rainfall followed by Valpoi at 8 cm and Sankhali at 6 cm respectively after what is proving to be a wet week in the state.
The rains have been blamed on a persistent off shore trough at mean sea level off the Goa- Karnataka coast.
According to the met office, moderate rain and thundershower are most likely to occur at most places over Goa state on 20th September; light to moderate rain/thundershowers are most likely to occur at most places over Goa state on September 21 and 22 and very likely at a few places on 23 and 24.
There has however been no weather warning issued over the next four days, except a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea over the next twenty-four hours.
The persistent rains have further reduced the rainfall deficit witnessed this year to below the 400mm mark with the seasonal total standing at 2197.8 mm of rainfall.
Traffic blocked at Poinguinim
CANACONA: With heavy rains continuing to lash Canacona taluka, a huge tree fell on the road, blocking the highway for over two hours at Poinguinim on Wednesday evening.
According to Fire Services, the tree fell right in the middle of the national highway near Parashuram temple at Poinguinim at about 2 pm, blocking the traffic.
While the fire personnel cleared the tree on one side, partially restoring the traffic, police diverted the traffic through a narrow internal road till the tree was completely removed and traffic was restored only past 4 pm.
Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed the taluka, causing water logging in several areas.
The observatory recorded about 40 mm of rainfall till going to the press. The seasonal total has almost touched 2,600 mm, which continues to reel below seasonal best. Following the rains in September, the reservoir of Chapoli dam also showed substantial improvement, recording 37.40 RL on Wednesday.
Flood-like situation in Sakhali, Keri

Heavy rains continued to lash Bicholim and Sakhali, resulting in flood-like situation in Sakhali and Keri area on Wednesday.
According to sources, the water level of Valvanti river increased, causing flood-like situation. Later, the water level decreased and the situation was normal in the area.
The WRD officers are keeping a close watch on the situation however, there is no much danger in the area of flooding, informed WRD officers.
Assistant engineer Pawadi said: "The Anjunem dam site recorded rainfall of almost 160 mm in two days and on Wednesday the water level was 93.08 meters and all four gates of the dam have been kept open and water was being released in Kasti river. The total rainfall recorded in Anjunem dam area is 3,076 mm."
Meanwhile, the water level of Amthane dam was full and water was being released. The low-lying area in the Amthane dam site have been kept on alert. People have been advised not to go near the river as it may be dangerous due to heavy rains.
The Bicholim fire personnel were busy in rescue operations and cleared the trees that had uprooted on the roads in Bicholim taluka.
