The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday issued a public notice directing the removal of 67 unused and abandoned vehicles in Vasco. MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has given a 15-day period to all vehicle owners to remove the abandoned vehicles, failing which the MMC will confiscate them and auction them on an “as-is-where-is basis”.
“According to a survey by MMC, 67 vehicles were identified as unused and abandoned. After obtaining the registered addresses of the owners, notices were sent through the office of Asst Director of Transport (ADT). Some vehicles have been stationary for over 6 months with no number plates and tyres deflated,” Fernandes said.
“In a reply from the ADT, some vehicle details were not found in the system and news reports were given to create an awareness. These vehicle are causing obstruction besides causing an eyesore. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, any vehicle hampering pedestrian movement by being an obstruction has to be removed.”
“Citizens and owners of vehicles have been given a final notice to remove the vehicles from footpaths and roadsides within 15 days, failing which the council will have to take stringent action, including seizing the vehicle and auctioning of it on as-is-where-is basis,” Fernandes added.
“As per section 127 and 201 of MV Act 1988, if a vehicle is unattended even for 10 hours or more in a public place causing a barrier to the free flow of traffic, it can be removed using towing service by the authorities.”
“The list of vehicles with their registration numbers are displayed in the notice board which can be verified from the taxation office. This is the last and final notice to owners of all unused and abandoned vehicles and MMC will act without further information after the period of 15 days is over,” warned Fernandes.
