Mormugao MLA questions sudden hike in fees at MPA school

VASCO

Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Friday evening met Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Chairman Dr N Vinodkumar over a sudden hike in the fee structure of the Deep Vihar Primary School (DVPS).

Amonkar told reporters that the DVPS had suddenly hiked the fee structure during mid-term, leading to anger among parents, who then sent him a memorandum signed by over 300 parents. Amonkar said he raised the issue with the MPA Chairman Dr N Vinodkumar because the school is run by the MPA.

“The fee structure cannot be hiked suddenly in between the academic year. The school issued a notice to parents on Thursday and the fees have increased from Rs 2,400 a month to around Rs 4,200 a month,” said Amonkar. “The MPA chairman has assured to take up the issue with the school management.”

“MPA, being a central government organisation, should have actually used CSR funds for development for locals but the situation is totally opposite where MPA is taking more money from locals.”

Amonkar said he would meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on the issue. “I had also raised the issue of improving education and offering more facilities to students in Mormugao constituency in the recent assembly session. I had even suggested that the government take over the DVPS because the financial position of the MPA was not good. The school could then get a grant-in-aid.”

“A file for this proposal has already been moved. Education department officials have even inspected the school,” the MLA added.
