Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai on Monday mulled shifting all the scrapyards from Fatorda and neighbouring Margao to an industrial zone to rid the residential areas in the city from the menace of the yards.
He said the Town and Country Planning will be willing to change zones close to the industrial areas, including Margao and Verna, to accommodate the scrapyards from the cities. And, the TCP Minister said the objective will be achieved within this calendar year wherein the focus will be on shifting the scrapyards from the residential areas to the industrial zones.
He made the announcement at Chandrawado, which is the hub of many a scrapyard in Fatorda constituency, after launching the commencement of new water supply works in the area at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. “We have added many amenities in the Chandrawado area of Fatorda constituency, including garden, gymnasium, community hall, all of world class standard. Our focus now will be to shift the scrapyards from the residential locality to the industrial zones within one year. We are even ready to achieve this objective through private participation by giving them the zone change,” he said.
Sardesai, however, reminded that the scrapyard owners also help in the solid waste management in the city as they manage the waste generated in the city. “People don’t want the scrapyards in the city, but we create the scrap. The solution lies in shifting the scrapyards from the cities to the proposed industrial zones,” he added.
The TCP Minister also said that the new Arlem-Ravindra Bhavan four-lane road has a provision for water pipeline on both sides, which will prevent digging and damage to the hot-mixed roads. He said similar provision for parallel water pipeline on both sides of the road is being
proposed along the Borda and others roads in Fatorda.
In the meantime, daily wage SAG employees called on the TCP Minister on Monday with a plea to get their services regularized. They pointed out that they have put in many years of service, but the promised regularization is yet to come from the sports department. The TCP Minister has promised to take up their grievances with the Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar.
