Multiple raids yield big liquor haul

PANAJI
Multiple raids by the police yielded a big haul of liquor worth nearly a million rupees over the last twenty four hours.

A team from the Pernem police station swooped down on two different sites at Morjim, a known tourism hub, and the raids yielded liquor stocked without authorisation worth some Rs 5 lakh.

The entire seized stock has been handed over to the State Excise Department for further prosecution process.

In another swift police action, some 200-odd bottles of various brands of liquor, again stored without authorisation or any paper work, were seized in Chapora under the jurisdiction of Anjuna police station.

The liquor worth nearly one-lakh rupees was also handed over to the Excise Department.

In South Goa, an outlet in Colva styled 'AK Wine Store' came under the radar of the Goa Police's Crime Branch, a team of which seized Rs 3.8 lakh worth of liquor hoarded illegally.

The stock, which had no authorisation of the excise department, was stored in a house adjacent to the store's warehouse, Crime Branch sources said.

Liquor distribution is one of the most common electoral malpractice in the State and the election machinery usually keeps a hawk-eye vigilance over illegal movement and storage of stocks during the election season.
