Upset over water shortage for the past six days, residents of Murmune village in Guleli have threatened to stage a protest if the issue is not resolved by Tuesday night.
Addressing a news conference, a group of locals from Murmune complained that their area has been facing a water shortage for the last six days.
They claimed this shortage was due to a rupture in the pipeline that supplies water from the Paikul water project and added that one water tanker was insufficient to meet the needs of 70 houses in Murmune.
They asserted that despite complaints, nothing had been done in the matter. The unhappy villagers marched to the water supply office in Valpoi at 10 am to protest against the water shortage.
However, the aggrieved locals said the officers were not in the office till 11.30 am and they have warned of agitation on Wednesday if the water supply was not restored by Tuesday night.
Speaking to reporters, former sarpanch Rohidas Gaonkar said complaints had been made on several occasions.
“We have even tried contacting officials by phone, but the officers have not been cooperating with us,” he said.
"One water tanker is being sent for 70 houses every two days, and this has left only four pots of water for every household. How can families manage with such meagre water supply?".
"The government announced 16,000 litres of free water every month. But in our village of Murmune, only 50 litres of water is available for two days," Gaonkar added.
Later when contacted, PWD Assistant Engineer Soma Naik said all efforts would be made to restore the water supply in the area.
