SANGUEM
A 58-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her house in Orcotto-Sanguem.
According to reports, the woman, Bharati Rajendra Samant, was staying alone in the house since the death of her husband some 16 years ago.
Samant was running a general store in a portion of the residential house and was earning her livelihood.
Samant was last seen at her shop on Sunday and she did not open the shop on Monday. When she did not not open the shop on Tuesday as well, relatives and villagers became suspicious and calls to her phone were not answered.
Locals then notified Sanguem police and a police team broke open the lock of the shutter and entered the house, only to find Samant lying dead on the floor.
Relatives and villagers are suspicious over the cause of her death and have appealed to police for a detailed investigation in the matter.
Sources informed The Goan that there were bloodstains on the body, while a cupboard was found open and gold jewellery were allegedly missing from the house.
Police also found the door leading to the terrace open, raising more suspicion into the death of the woman. A box which was used to store some gold ornaments was found lying close to the body.
Sanguem Police led by Pravin Gauns under the supervision of DySP Harish Dessai conducted the panchanama and sent the body for a post mortem. Further investigation is in progress.
