The Navelim subway is inundated with rain water, preventing the student community from safely using the underpass to the educational institutions, with a visibly agitated Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro saying that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s instructions are being disobeyed on the ground, while demanding action against erring officials.
Displaying copies of a letter received by him from the Chief Minister’s office written by Bhushan Savaikar, Under Secretary to the CM, with the report by Executive Engineer, Div XIV, stating that the Navelim subway is in good condition and is open and being used by public, Faleiro along with Navelim Sarpanch Wilma D’Silva and her deputy Paulo Pereira, led the media to the subway to prove that the underpass is waterlogged and not in use.
“It is apparent from the non-maintenance of the subway that Chief Minister’s instructions are not being obeyed by the departments on the ground. There is no governance in the State in the absence of the Chief Minister,” Faleiro asserted, while demanding strict action against the erring officials for misguiding the Chief Minister’s office and the failure to maintain the subway.
“This subway was built over 10 years ago during my previous stint in office to meet the needs of the student community. Around that time, the strength of the student community studying in Navelim schools might have been around 3,000. The figure must have now jumped to 10,000, but the subway is in a dilapidated state for want of maintenance by the government,” Faleiro said.
He pointed out that the subway was opened by
him after he got re-elected as the Navelim MLA last year, but the subway is now inundated with rain water, with none of the government agencies showing any interest to put the subway in use.
“I want to say how the officials are circumventing and disobeying the direction of the Chief Minister. I was given an assurance on the floor of the House that the twin issues of subway and traffic signals will be put in place in the interest of the student community, but in vain,” he added.
Faleiro was also critical of officials giving lame excuses that the departments have no budgetary provision to take up maintenance works.
He also expressed concern over the road digging activity still underway in Navelim constituency despite the ban order issued by the district Collector, demanding arrest of the violations of the Collector’s order.
