Old Goa police have arrested an employee of the Indian Navy in the fatal hit-and-run case reported at Merces, which claimed the life of a pedestrian.
According to information available, the accused Naganesh Bandi (32) had fled from the spot after his vehicle hit a pedestrian Manoj Shashidharan (39), native of Kerala but residing at Merces.
Shashidharan later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at GMC hospital.
The Old Goa police began investigation in the mishap and had only the broken parts of the four-wheeler to rely on. After consulting experts, the police established that the four-wheeler could be a silver-coloured Swift DZire of 2010 make.
Accordingly, the Old Goa police formed five teams and began to gather information from garages, locals, etc.
Finally, the police got a lead in the case on Monday and were able to trace the vehicle, and also the address of the accused Bandi, who apparently was residing at the Varnapuri residential quarters where the four-wheeler was hidden.
Accordingly, the accused was nabbed by the police from Dabolim and the vehicle was attached.
The police informed that the accused was constantly changing his location to evade arrest.
Throwing light on the incident, the police informed that the accused Bandi was playing in a casino in Porvorim on April 7 till late night.
“He left the casino in the early morning hours of April 8 and on reaching the culvert at Merces, he dashed his car against the deceased and fled away from the spot,” the police added while stating that the accused then hid his vehicle and was absconding to avoid arrest.
The accused was arrested under Sections 279, 304, 201 of IPC and 134 (a) (b) of MV Act.
Old Goa PSI Lauren Sequeira is conducting further investigations in the matter.
