MAPUSA
Congress will bring a change in Mapusa and North Goa, Congress leader Elvis Gomes said on Friday, while calling upon people to join the party in large numbers to bring the change.
Gomes also said that positions were inconsequential but the desire to work for the party and strengthen the organisation was crucial.
“We need to change the perception that North Goa is the stronghold of the BJP and the only party that can do that is Congress. We will bring a change in Mapusa and North Goa this time around,” Gomes said.
The former AAP convenor who recently joined the Congress was addressing the media after visiting the North Goa District Congress Committee office in Mapusa.
GPCC Vice President Gurudas Natekar, North Goa District Congress Committee President Vijay Bhike, Vice President Chandan Mandrekar and General Secretary Bolanath Gadi were also present.
Gomes said “We are all workers of the party. Positions are not important. Any person who fights an election on the Congress platform will fight as a grass root worker.”
He also said that people have moved away from the party and winning the confidence of the people was equally crucial.
“We have to accept that defections have happened and that is why people have lost confidence in Congress. The confidence has to be restored. The cleaning process has started. We have a lot of youth and women who are ready to join the Congress,” he said.
The former bureaucrat-turned-politician said that he was convinced that only Congress can give the right direction to the State.
“In 2012, people gave an opportunity to the BJP. In 2017 they have taken it forcibly. Ten years is a long time to show something. They cannot do it. And people are now looking back at Congress. I appeal to all those who have reservations to come back to Congress,” he said.
He said time will decide whether he will take active participation in electoral politics. “Everything will be decided at the right time by the right people,” he said.
