Nephew stabs uncle over family dispute in Loliem

CANACONA

In a shocking incident, a 44-year-old man from Loliem-Polem was stabbed by his nephew multiple times over a family dispute early on Sunday.

The incident occurred after Ajay Kharat (25) stabbed his uncle Janu Sonu Kharat (44) for allowing his father who was allegedly inebriated to stay overnight at Dapot-Maxem.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Chaudi but was declared brought dead.

Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas rushed to the crime site on getting information and arrested Ajay who attempted to flee on seeing the police.

According to sources, the two families are living at a distance of just 25 metres from each other at at Dapot-Maxem on an uncultivated land belonging to Comunidade of Loliem-Polem behind God's Gift Celebration Hall, Maxem.

On the night before the attack, as usual the father (Ram Kharat) of the accused is believed to have come home drunk. On seeing this, the family members did not allow him inside and bolted the door. Left with nowhere to go, Ram went to the house of his younger brother and spent the night there.

The next morning he reportedly complained to his younger brother that his family had put him out of the house and had bolted the door.

Enraged by the act, the younger Kharat (victim) Janu went to the house of his brother and questioned his brother’s wife and other family members.

Just then, Ajay (his nephew) who woke up hearing the arguments, picked up a knife from the kitchen and in a fit of rage began to stab his uncle.

By the time, the other family members realised what was happening the victim collapsed in a pool of blood. He was immediately shifted to the CHC where the doctor on duty declared him brought dead.

Police have registered a case of murder under Section 302 IPC against Ajay Kharat based on the complaint of Kalpana Janu Kharat, the wife of the victim.

DySP Sandesh Chodankar along with PI and others conducted the panchanama at the crime site and attached the knife used in the crime and collected other material as part of the investigation.

The accused has been booked under Section 302 of IPC for murder and will be produced before the JMFC court, Canacona for further remand on Monday.

Police sources said the murderous attack was in a fit of rage and was not pre-planned and that the accused does not have any criminal history.
