"The tender has already been floated and work on the project is expected to begin shortly," an official from the electricity department said.
According to information, the government has sanctioned 145 km of cable lines in North Goa, of which 110 km of cable lines will be laid in Sattari taluka at a cost of about Rs 8.50 crore.
This is expected to benefit many villages in Sattari taluka, which have struggled to avail of proper power supply due to various constraints.
Responding to growing demands from people in the region, the electricity department decided to replace this line with a new cable system
According to electricity department sources, this new cable system will cover about 90% of those places where the existing line passed through forested areas.
Valpoi Electricity Assistant Engineer Ramdas Salelkar said there would be five main feeders at Bhironda, Saleli, Nagargao, Thane and Valpoi town to control power supply in Sattari taluka.
"A total of 110 kms of overhead cable lines will be laid from different feeder location which includes Thane (30 km), Valpoi town (11 kms), Bhironda (29 kms), Nagargao (20 kms) and Saleli (20 kms)," said Salelkar.
"This is a new cable system to be laid in Sattari taluka to avoid frequent power failures. These cables would be in a better position to withstand strong winds and the heavy rains," he added.
"There is also a proposal for an underground cable line between Amona and Valpoi."
When contacted, Poriem MLA Pratapsing Rane welcomed the government's decision to lay new overhead cables in Sattari taluka.
"These new cables will not only minimize public grievances over frequent power failures specially during the monsoon season, but will also minimize the workload on the department,"
Rane said.
POWER WOES
At present, Sattari taluka gets its entire power supply from the Amona substation via Sonshi.
However, this 33 KV line is overhead and frequently developing faults, prompting the electricity department to propose the replacement of this overhead line with an underground cable at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore.
Those villages in remote areas were provided with an overhead electricity line passing through forested areas.
During the rains and strong winds, these old cables would frequently snap repairing them would be a tough task.
