Mohammed Samiulla Faniband is the new sarpanch of the village panchayat of Rumdamol.
In the elections held on Wednesday, Samiulla was declared elected unopposed after the presiding officer received his lone nomination for the post.
He succeeds outgoing sarpanch Vishwadas Naik, who was ousted from office in a no-confidence motion.
This is the second time that Samiulla has taken over the reins of Rumdamol panchayat in his political career.
After taking over the reins of office, Samiulla told the media that he would accord top priority for the resolution of the garbage issue plaguing the panchayat, which comprises Rumdamol Housing board area.
While thanking all the panchayat members for reposing their trust in him, Samiulla said that the panchayat would try to resolve the waste imbroglio by taking up sorting of waste on the panchayat-owned land admeasuring 1,000 square meters.
“The neighbouring Margao Municipal Council has charged the neighbouring village panchayats of disposing their waste in the municipal jurisdiction,” he said and added, “I would like to state that the Rumdamol VP would accord to the issue so that our waste is handled within the village itself,” he said.
He also outlined his plan to set up a market complex on land admeasuring 18,000 square meters which was gifted by the Housing Board to the village panchayat.
