Claims of plastic-coated eggs left residents of New Vaddem in Vasco boiling with anger, after many of whom had purchased these eggs on Friday.
According to locals, the eggs were purchased from a rickshaw driver who posed as a wholesaler and had sold the eggs at wholesale rates.
Asha More of New-Vaddem told reporters that her son had purchased these plastic-coated eggs from the rickshaw driver.
On Saturday morning, More boiled the eggs in front of media persons to prove her point that layers of plastic were found in the eggs purchased by many residents on Friday.
“After the eggs were purchased, I cooked and served them for dinner but surprisingly, the taste was totally different and had the smell of plastic.”
“I later noticed that after boiling the eggs, they had a plastic coating from the inside and plastic-like material began reflecting as I peeled the eggs,” More added.
It is, however, unclear how many households have purchased these eggs and the residents had failed to take note of the rickshaw’s registration number, to enable investigations into the incident.
“There is a fear that such plastic-coated eggs may have been sold and purchased by hundreds of people, not only from New Vaddem but from other parts of Goa. I appeal to people to be safe and careful. We had only seen plastic eggs on TV and mobile phones, but today we have experienced this in reality.”
“I appeal to authorities to take note that plastic-coated eggs are being sold openly in the State and they must initiate an enquiry in the matter,” More added.
Another resident, S Omkar, admitted he had purchased a lot of the plastic-coated eggs as they were sold at cheap wholesale rates.
“Every egg has a plastic type coats and is like a rubber when cut. The government must immediately act on this incident and trace those involved in supplying such eggs that could pose a serious health hazard to people,” said Omkar.
