While the residents of port town are fighting against coal dust and wood chips pollution, a new pollution in the form of white powder has been haunting the residents over last couple of days.
On Monday morning, the residents of the port town, especially the two-wheeler riders and pedestrians had to face white powder that was spilled on the road.
Speaking to The Goan, Santosh Naik who travels to Panaji everyday for his work said for the last couple of days, white powder is spilled all over the road and the dust created enters the eyes and causes burning sensation.
“The traffic police and the RTO have failed to take cognizance of the spillage and pull up the company responsible for using this powder,”
said Naik.
Robert Vaz said the municipal council has failed to clear the white powder from the road. “It does not affect them as they do not travel by this road, but we the residents are subjected to the white powder dust pollution,” said Vaz.
“I have seen many scooterists skidding over the white powder, but somehow they balance themselves and carry on, while others escape from falling down,” added Vaz.
When contacted, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) CO Deepali Naik, who was present in the cabin of MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik, said it is the duty of the Pollution Control Board to keep a check on the spillage and pollution.
Chairperson Deepak then summoned the MMC engineer and directed him to clear the road by sending the MMC workers.
Councillor Dhanpal Swami, who was also present in the chairperson’s cabin, informed that the white powder is ‘Potash’ and is used by a company at Zuarinagar Sancoale.
Based on the information provided by Councillor Swami, Chairperson Deepak assured to summon the company officials and direct them to take necessary precautions while transporting the potash to the company in future.
