Next big project is to send humans to space and get them back safely: Ex-ISRO chief

PANAJI

Buoyed by the success of Chandrayaan-3, former Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman Dr K Sivan has said the next dream project for the premier space agency will be to send humans to space and bring them back to Earth safely.

Addressing the ninth convocation ceremony of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in South Goa, Sivan said ISRO is toying with the idea of a Space Mission. “The agency is planning on sending humans to the space and bringing them back to Earth safely”, he said.

The former ISRO chairman said “test flights, emergency escape system tests are planned to happen next week. Many tests will be done, such as an unmanned flight and after its success we will be sending humans to space”.

Sivan also said, “ISRO does not want to grow vertically… now we want to grow horizontally.  The space sector is open to public and private companies in India to make satellites, rockets and launch them.

Motivating graduates and students at NIT Goa, Sivan urged them to make rockets and satellites and name them. “Make use of opportunities. Space technology can be used to bring a change in the rural economy and link villages to the urban sector”, he told them.

He said science and technology development is essential for the development of the nation. “These developments can be meaningful, faster, and effective, only if you have self-reliance, innovation in science and technology and an integrated approach of various disciplines”, he told students.

“Today, the entire nation is working towards creating Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, the great vision set forth by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Government is working towards creating robust national innovative ecosystem”.

“We are witnessing commendable progress made by the start-up-incubator-academic triad to boost motivation, innovative thinking and productivity so that there is conducive environment for entrepreneurship in the country. Therefore, make use of this opportunity to make Bharat shining,” Dr Sivan advised.
