No end in sight: Margao footpaths overrun after each cleanup
MARGAO
Footpaths and pavements across the commercial capital seem to have increasingly become a refuge for migrants and anti-social elements.
After the Margao police launched a sustained crackdown on anti-socials loitering and sleeping on the benches of the Margao Municipal Garden — following the intervention of Margao MLA and PWD Minister Digambar Kamat — many such individuals have now shifted to the footpaths near the Margao railway station and its rear side.
Even as authorities undertake beautification works in and around the station area, including the Aquem side, the continued presence of drunkards and other anti-socials along these footpaths presents an unsightly image of the city to hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors arriving daily by train.
Police officials stated that periodic drives have helped keep such elements at bay, but they tend to resurface after some time, making enforcement difficult.
