No increase in house tax: CCP to relive residents from tax burden

PANAJI

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Tuesday announced that house tax would not be increased this year highlighting that residents should not be burdened due to lapses in tax collection by the corporation in previous years.

The budget was discussed during a CCP meeting chaired by Mayor Rohit Monserrate in the presence of Deputy Mayor Vasant Agshikar and other corporation members. During the meeting, the corporation also reviewed CCP’s revenue collection mechanisms.

“Before we came into office, taxes were increased almost every year by 5 to 10 percent. This year we decided not to raise taxes because it would be unfair to the people. Just because the corporation failed to collect taxes properly, citizens should not suffer,” Monserrate said.

The corporation approved a budget of Rs 107.17 crore for the financial year 2026–27, with emphasis on civic infrastructure, sanitation, public services, revenue management and development works across Panaji. Officials stated that the proposed budget prioritises development projects and improvement of civic amenities within the capital city.

The Mayor also highlighted the shortage of police personnel in Panaji, pointing out that the city currently requires around 30 to 40 additional traffic police personnel and nearly 50 to 60 town police officers.

Monserrate further expressed concern that there are insufficient officers available to enforce fines and maintain order, noting that Panaji currently has only one PSI who remains occupied with administrative duties inside the office.
