With the commissioning of the redeveloped SGPDA wholesale fish market building on the anvil, questions are raised about the fate of the retail fish trade and the migrant vendors who currently operate around the existing market.
Well, pose this question to SGPDA Chairman, MLA Krishna Salkar and he says with clarity that no retail sale of fish will be allowed in the new wholesale fish market building. In fact, he was categorical in saying that other than the group of traditional Goan vendors, who were allowed to do business in the wholesale fish market during the Manohar Parrikar regime, no other fish vendor will be allowed inside the complex in the future.
If implemented in letter and spirit, the dozens of migrant vendors swarming around the existing wholesale fish market by selling fish in retail will be virtually out of the market complex. “The SGPDA wholesale fish market is primarily meant for wholesale fish activity and not for retail. The PDA has a mega retail fish market near the KTC bus stand”, Salkar added.
