The controversial Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2022, mandating the election of a municipal chairperson and vice-chairperson by show of hands, could not be put to test at the election of the Margao Municipal Chairperson on Wednesday, but for a different reason.
All eyes were focused on the DMA-appointed Presiding Officer Vikas Gaunekar as he went about conducting the election for the Margao civic chief. With the nine-member Goa Forward-backed group of councillors abstaining, the Presiding Officer was the cynosure of all eyes over whether he would press for election by show of hands despite his office having received the lone nomination paper of BJP-backed Damu Shirodkar.
Finally, the situation for the showing of hands did not arise after the Presiding Officer announced that Damu Shirodkar was duly elected after receiving his lone nomination for the vacant post.
