No water makes summer tougher in pockets of Taleigao, Dona Paula

Issue has been occurring annually for past few years

PANAJI

Irregular to no water at all has made this year’s unusually hotter summer even tougher for residents of some pockets of Taleigao and Dona Paula, and for many of them, it’s repeatedly the same story of woes every year.

Residents in areas of Taleigao such as Porsem bhat, Nagali, Caranzalem, and in Dona Paula as well as the Hawaii beach area are complaining that they have been getting no water at all or the PWD supplied water is extremely irregular over the last few days.

Several of the gated apartment complexes are forced to bring in private water tankers, else it is impossible to make it through the hot and sultry weather conditions these days by relying on the PWD supply, a resident complained.

However, in areas where residents live in individual houses, the process of getting tanker supply is tedious as the water has to be filled in buckets and taken to their homes from the spot where the tanker is parked.

Perennial problem at Hawaii beach

PANAJI: For the dozen-plus families living in the hamlet hugging the Hawaii beach, water scarcity at this time of the year has been repeating each year for over a decade.

Last year, the issue had been taken up with the PWD, and a technical assistant who visited and inspected the area found that there were two pipelines, one leading to supply to a nearby hotel and the second ‘L’ shaped pipe from which the village gets water but with very low pressure.

Residents have taken up their summer water woes multiple times at the Gram Sabha but the response from the authorities has been pathetic, one resident complained.

At a time when the State government often claims 100 per cent coverage under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme, people in these suburbs of the capital Panaji have long been making do with no water at all in these summer months.

As one resident, who gave his name as just ‘Chris’ pointed out, their best hope is to get this issue to be resolved now, when elections to both the Lok Sabha as well as the Taleigao panchayat are on.
