Underlining the need to respect dignity of labour, senior Congress leader and Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro has said that nobody should belittle the contributions and achievements of Goans in all spheres of life abroad.
When The Goan sought the reaction of the former Chief Minister to the statement made by senior Congress MLA Pratapsing Rane that Goans have been cleaning toilets abroad, Faleiro said that he is proud that a large number of Goans, wherever they are, have done Goa proud by excelling themselves in all spheres of activity, in the field of economics, social, politics and even religious.
“A Goan may not have become the Prime Minister of India, but a Goan Antonio Costa rose to become the Prime Minister of Portugal. A Goan may not have become the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, but a Goan Koisuro had the distinction of becoming the Speaker of Portugal. A Goan, Mr Thamba rose to become the Chief Justice of Portugal though a Goan has not achieved the feat in India. There are many Goans who are members of Parliament of United Kingdom and other countries,” Faleiro said.
He pointed out that when Goa was facing an economic meltdown after the mining crisis, the State’s economy was not affected much with the steady flow of NRI remittances. “Even in the past, remittances from Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Canada, Germany and other countries had kept our economy on a sound footing,” he said, adding that one cannot ignore the achievements of overseas Goans in all spheres of life.
