North Goa adopts ‘zero-fatality’ roadmap to curb road deaths

PANAJI
In a bid to curb road fatalities, the North Goa District Road Safety Committee on Thursday resolved to adopt the Quick Reference Guide, “Towards Zero-Fatality Districts,” aligning district-level enforcement and infrastructure measures with defined reduction targets.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Additional Collector–I, North Goa Gurudas Desai and attended by officials from line departments.

Officials said the framework would serve as a roadmap for coordinated action by stakeholder departments to systematically reduce fatal accidents in the district.

Among key decisions, the committee directed the compilation and analysis of data from Goa Medical College & Hospital on the nature of grievous injuries and cases resulting in permanent disabilities due to road crashes. The panel also called for follow-up on the analysis of fatal accidents reported in North Goa to identify recurring causes and high-risk stretches.

The committee emphasised awareness on the Compensation to Victims of Hit & Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022, and extended support to the ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ campaign, with the Tourism Department expected to assist enforcement agencies in North Goa.

Joint site inspections were ordered at Merces Junction, Atal Setu Junction and the Bambolim Subway to identify road engineering deficiencies and recommend corrective measures. The panel also underlined the need to increase the availability of ambulances in the district to strengthen emergency response.

The meeting took note of the commencement of construction of a Foot Over Bridge near the Holy Shrine at Bambolim, the progress of the Porvorim flyover project, installation of cameras at traffic signal junctions, and recommendations made in two Road Safety Audit reports.

It was further informed that Children Transport Committees are being set up in schools across North Goa as part of efforts to improve student transport safety.
