In an anti climax, the no-confidence motion against Santa Cruz Deputy Sarpanch Diksha Kavlekar was defeated, after four panchas who signed the motion did not turn up at the special meeting on Monday.
The panchas who did not turn up included William Gonsalves, Vincent Lourenco, Shweta Naik and Anvisha Balekar.
Interestingly, Anna Fernandes and Sanjay Faterpekar who also had signed the no-confidence motion were present at the meeting, but this time in support of the deputy sarpanch.
Sarpanch Maria Rodrigues, Tony Fernandes, Indira Fernandes and Namdev Naik were also present.
Sources inside the panchayat told The Goan that St Cruz MLA Babush Monserrate reportedly intervened and saw to it that his panel which was ruling the panchayat remained intact.
If the deputy sarpanch was ousted, then the Santa Cruz Panchayat would have faced a peculiar situation with Sarpanch Maria Rodrigues already tendering her resignation a few days back. Ten days from the day of resignation, the sarpanch’s post too would have fallen vacant and an administrator would have had to be appointed to run the affairs of the panchayat till a new sarpanch was elected.
Speaking to The Goan, panch Sanjay Faterpekar informed that since appointment of an administrator would have hampered development works in the village, he changed his decision and decided to support the ruling panel.
Meanwhile, the no-confidence motion against Chimbel Sarpanch Mohini Narve will be taken up in the panchayat office on Tuesday at 10 am. Allegations and counter allegations of corruption are likely to be leveled by the two camps and the special meeting is likely to see some tense moments.
