A day after Margao Municipal councillor Mahesh Amonkar warned that illegal vending on the Margao footpaths has given rise to accidents, a senior city-based BJP leader has requested the Margao police to initiate action against the illegal hawkers running an illegal bazaar right opposite the Margao Municipal building in the heart of the commercial capital.
In his letter, BJP leader Naveen Pai Raikar drew the police attention to the problem of illegal hawkers running an illegal bazaar right opposite Margao Municipality in the heart of the Margao city. These illegal hawkers, he said, have been causing a lot of nuisance and creating problems for the public, as well as for the local shopkeepers who are running a legal business in the New Market of Margao.
“As you may be aware, these hawkers have been occupying the streets in Margao without any legal permission. They are selling their products on the footpaths and creating a hindrance for pedestrians. They are also picking up fights among themselves, which is causing a disturbance to the local residents and passer-by,” he said.
He added: “These hawkers are not paying any taxes to the local authorities. This is resulting in a loss to the public exchequer. The local shopkeepers who are running a legal business in Margao are suffering a loss as these illegal hawkers are selling similar products at a much lower price, thereby affecting the shopkeeper’s livelihoods”.
The BJP leader has further pointed out that these hawkers are creating a mess in the city, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for the local residents to go about their daily activities.
Making a fervent plea to the Margao police to initiate immediate action to remove these illegal hawkers from the streets of Margao, Raikar said this will not only ensure the safety and convenience of the public but also protect the interests of the local shopkeepers.
