Following the suspension of Vocational Instructor (Practical) Roque Coelho and Group Instructor Vishnu Naik at the ITI-Farmagudi, the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (DSD&E) has also placed the principal S S Gaonkar under suspension.
Gaonkar has been placed under suspension on charges of keeping the department in dark over the issue of harassment of students allegedly by the instructor. Assistant director Rajesh Lolienkar has been given charge of ITI
Farmagudi.
Coelho was suspended in connection with allegations of extortion, harassment and abuse after the student community had protested against him. About 50 trainees from the ITI had boycotted classes on Monday to demand action against Coelho, after alleging that he had extorted money and harassed them.
In an order, Director SD& E Aleixo F da Costa stated that he had placed Coelho "under suspension with immediate effect." During his period of suspension, Coelho has been directed to report to the DSD&E headquarters at Patto-Panaji.
Vishnu Naik was also placed under suspension for not taking the complaint of the students seriously.
When contacted, Costa said that Gaonkar had been placed under suspension as he had failed to bring the harassment issue to the notice of the department. "This issue was going on since the last one-and-half years. But the principal failed to inform us. Hence, action has been taken against him and the group instructor," Costa told The Goan.
