Smiles lit the faces of farmers from Modear-Nuvem after they reaped a moderate paddy harvest on the 60,000 sqm of fallow fields brought under cultivation this season.
The work of bringing the fallow fields under cultivation had started around two years ago with the help of mechanisation. Buoyed by the success, more farmers evinced interest in bringing the fallow fields under cultivation, with the service provider Valentino Rodrigues claiming that around 60,000 sqm brought under paddy cultivation this year.
Valentino said around 20 farmers had got together to revive the fallow paddy fields with the support of local social worker Everson Vales and service provider Moreno Rebello. “The farmers cultivated around 3,000 sqm of paddy in the last two years. After the experiment showed encouraging results, more farmers joined in the operation to bring additional land under cultivation via mechanisation by deploying tractors, harvesters, mechanised transplanting, etc,” he said.
To a question, he pointed the farmers had reaped an average harvest this year, adding they all look forward for a better yield next year.
A farmer from neighbouring Seraulim, Valencia Fernandes told the media that she cultivated the fields at Nuvem after obtaining permission from the owners. “We are happy that our hard work has borne fruit. We have got a good yield and we look forward for a better harvest next year,” she said.
Another local farmer Francisca Colaco said that mechanisation has made paddy cultivation easy and has expressed satisfaction over the yield.
