Suspected cases of dengue in Gandhinagar area of Vasco have prompted health authorities to clear mosquito breeding sites in the area.
Social worker and former councillor Dhanpal Swamy said a health official had contacted him after reports of suspected cases in Gandhinagar area.
"The cases are found near Jatashankar Temple and basically it is due to stagnant water stored in barrels. My wife, who is a councillor, and I have requested people not to store water in open barrels and to cover the barrel with a cloth.”
“The area has an issue with water supply and people tend to store water in barrels. Health officials have already visited the area and carried out necessary preventive measures like spraying of medicines, etc as of now," said Swamy.
A health official Michael Falcao said if the breeding did not stop, the cases could spread in surrounding areas as well
"We have confirmed one case of dengue and when we arrived at the site, we noticed that water was stored in open barrels in almost all houses. We found many tanks to be breeding sites for dengue mosquitoes.”
“We have told people not to store water in open barrels and if they don't listen, we will be forced to take legal action, issue them a notice and even disconnect their light and water connections. Storage of water in the open is a common problem in Vasco," said Falcao.
"We have emptied most barrels and sprayed medicines at the breeding sites. We have destroyed a lot of breeding sites and we have also carried Ultra Low Volume spraying as well which is much more effective," said Falcao.
