MARGAO
The Old market garden, in front of the Margao Civil and Criminal Court, is proposed for beautification again, this time by the Margao Municipal Council.
The garden was beautified around 2014 under the MPLAD scheme of South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha. Sadly, the garden lost its greenery and became a hot spot for antisocial elements for want of maintenance by the Margao civic body.
Margao Municipal Old market ward councillor Vitorino Tavares has now proposed to give the garden a face-lift out of the municipal funds. The foundation stone for the beautification of the garden was laid on Monday in the presence of citizens and councillors at around Rs 20 lakh.
The councillor informed that the neglected state of the garden has prompted him to give the area a face-lift.
“The beautification works amounting to Rs 20 lakh, inclusive of GST, will take place at the garden. We intended to provide pavers and plant saplings. A coffee shop will be set up inside the garden and the person running the shop will be mandated to look after the upkeep of the garden,” Vitorino said.
He said Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has not attended the foundation stone laying programme since the project is being executed out of the MMC funds.
