A Goa Dairy milk packet was found at the Sonsodo legacy dump on Friday when half a litre of milk was priced at Rs 13, raising hopes that the ongoing bio-remediation of the decades-old waste is progressing on the right track.
Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Managing Director Levinson Martins on Friday descended at Sonsodo on Friday for a review meeting with the Margao Municipal Council when he made his presence felt at the legacy dump only to find an empty Goa Dairy milk packet.
On analysing the date and the price of the milk packet, Martins exuded confidence that the ongoing bio-remediation work is on the right track.
“The milk packet found at the site reveals that the work is to remediate waste which was dumped at Sonsodo till around 2010. This means we have already cleared the legacy waste dumped at the site for the last 10-12 years,” he said.
The GWMC Managing Director pointed out that the contractor is presently operating two bio-remediation machines at the legacy dump.
“We plan to deploy the third machinery once the RDF is transported out to the cement manufacturing factories in Karnataka,” he said.
With the High Court setting February 2023 as the deadline for the GWMC and the Margao Municipal Council to remediate the legacy dump, Martins said that the deployment of additional machines will help in the quick remediation of the legacy dump.
“We started the remediation work in December 2020. We have almost covered 75 per cent of the legacy dump. Still, we have three months to clear the legacy dump,” he said while expressing confidence that the legacy dump should be cleared by February end.
