One person was injured while extensive damage was reported as strong winds and heavy rains disrupted normal life in Sattari taluka.
According to reports, Vithoba Sawant of Koparde-Sattari was injured when a tree came crashing down on his motorcycle at Redi Ghat, while he was proceeding from Valpoi to Honda on Thursday evening.
Sawant, who sustained multiple injuries to his head, leg and hand, was moved to the Valpoi Community Health Centre and later shifted to the GMC hospital for further treatment.
A number of trees also got uprooted in different parts of Sattari taluka, causing damage to property and blocking roads in Guleli, Khotoda, Sonal and Mauxi.
Water levels in the Madhei river had risen sharply and authorities have cautioned people residing along the banks of the river. Landslides were also reported at three places along the Goa-Belgaum road at Chorla Ghat and authorities were in the process of clearing the debris.
The Valpoi Fire Services claims to have received over 20 calls from different parts of Sattari Taluka and were reportedly working till Thursday night to clear the uprooted trees.
Many roads, including the Ponda-valpoi road, the Valpoi-Thana and Valpoi-Sonal road were submerged with rainwater, disrupting traffic along these routes.
On Thursday morning, the road was submerged at Bhuipal, compelling authorities to divert traffic from Valpoi to Honda via Kumarkhand village.
Authorities have also been keeping a close watch on rising water levels in the Mhadei river and may consider shifting people residing along the river banks to safer areas, if the water levels reach very high levels and endanger lives in the area.
