The husband-wife duo Srinivas and Shraddha Khalap who quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) less than 10 days ago to seemingly focus on social work, on Thursday joined the Congress at the Congress House.
Party president Girish Chodankar, and North District president Vijai Bhike accepted their membership forms.
Addressing media persons at Congress House, Srinivas said that he had joined the Congress to try and counter the “prevailing anarchy” and that secular forces needed to come together to defeat this anarchy. He also slammed the prime minister for encouraging the spread of fake news by following fake news handles on social networking sites.
“The PM follows 200 Twitter handles churning out fake news. No one knows if these fake IDs are tweeting from India or outside India,” he said, elaborating his anarchy point. He further said that they had already explained their reasons for leaving the AAP.
Shraddha and Srinivas formed a charitable trust ‘Jai Foundation’ just a day after quitting the AAP. They had said that while they were “not done with politics”, they needed to focus on what they were passionate about.
Srinivas had told media persons in Mapusa last week that his legal practice made it very difficult for him to give justice to political and personal life, more so because he was also associated with several associations working for tribals, welfare of fishermen, farmers, and government reservations.
“We are ready to work with all like-minded parties that are ready to raise relevant issues,” Shrinivas had said immediately after quitting the AAP. Both of them had said that the decision to quit the AAP was a difficult one and that it had taken them a while to arrive at the final decision.
