Speaking to The Goan, Curchorem PSI Sanit Kavlekar informed that Curchorem police received a call at about 6.30 pm to report that an unidentified youth had jumped into Zuari river from the Sanvordem bridge.
Curchorem police and the Curchorem fire services launched an operation in search of the missing youth.
“So far, the Curchorem police have not received any missing complaint in this connection,” said PSI Kavlekar.
While onlookers during the May tragedy had overcrowded the Sanvordem bridge, -- which eventually collapsed and claimed two lives -- to witness operations in search of a youth who had committed suicide, this time too, a group of onlookers converged at the new concrete bridge as search operations were underway.
“Following the tragedy in May, we took precautions and immediately cleared around ten onlookers near the bridge. We then stationed police personal at both the entry points of the Sanvordem bridge and also kept a strict watch.” “This time, we did not allow onlookers at the bridge to avoid a tragedy similar to the Sanvordem footbridge collapse,” said PSI Kavlekar.
