The Mhadei water diversion imbroglio is set to eclipse the one-day session of the Goa legislative assembly on Tuesday being held to fulfill the Constitutional requirement of ratifying extension of reservations for SCs, STs and Anglo-Indians, with the Opposition joining hands to move an adjournment motion on the issue.
Legislators of the Congress, Goa Forward Party, MGP and one independent will move the adjournment motion on Mhadei water diversion issue.
Leaders of the GFP and MGP -- Vijay Sardesai and Sudin Dhavalikar -- met Opposition leader Digambar Kamat and appealed to him to move the adjournment motion.
Soon after the meeting, the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) resolved to support the motion.
The motion will be moved under Section 68 of Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business of the House, Kamat said.
The Congress has five MLAs in the House, while GFP has three, Dhavlikar is the lone MLA and there is one Independent in Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte.
All 10 MLAs will support the adjournment motion, said Kamat. Governor Satya Pal Malik had summoned the one-day session of the Goa Legislative Assembly to meet at 11.30 am on Tuesday to ratify a constitutional amendment bill which extends reservation to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, besides the Anglo Indian community. The one-day session is also slated to approve the Central GST Amendment Bill.
Kamat also said that the narcotic drug trade which has become rampant in the State will be raised in the Assembly session.
The issue of the poor financial condition of the State will also be highlighted, he added.
Stating that youth are getting attracted to narcotic drugs, senior Congress leader Pratapsing Rane said Goa’s peaceful image has to be
maintained and demanded that EDM festivals like Sunburn should be banned and Goa’s image as a ‘family tourist destination’ salvaged.
Another senior Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro said there is no development work happening in Goa as the Public Works Department is not sanctioned funds, while Ravi Naik demanded that government should seek a one-time grant from the Centre for development works of the State.
