Opposition, NSUI demand probe after BITS Pilani student deaths

PANAJI: The BITS Pilani Goa campus is facing renewed scrutiny after the alleged suicide of 20-year-old Rishi Nair, marking the fifth such incident within a year. The opposition parties and students' union have demanded special independent probe into the suicidal episode.

Opposition leaders and the Goa unit of the National Students' Union of India took to 'X' to condemn the government’s inaction and demand immediate accountability.

Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao slammed the government, calling for urgent measures to tackle the alarming spate of suicides. “The Government must take immediate action to address the alarming rate of student suicides at BITS Pilani, which has witnessed its fifth case in the past two years. Revisiting the syllabus and engaging with the student community are crucial steps. Police investigations are still pending, and this needs urgent attention to prevent further tragedies,” Alemao said.

GFP Chief Vijai Sardesai criticized the systemic failures that have allowed repeated student deaths. “How many more deaths before accountability? These tragedies expose shocking lapses in campus safety, crime control, and mental health support. This is not an ‘incident’; it’s a pattern that demands a serious independent investigation. Every death is a question mark on the system’s conscience,” he said.

NSUI Goa also demanded immediate action, urging the state DGP to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incidents. “Shame on the Goa government for failing to address and investigate this string of suicides. Incompetence has cost lives. Systemic failures must be probed, and justice delivered,” said NSUI President Naushad Chowdhari.
