Accusing the Daasha Classic Society at Quepem and local authorities of failing to act on an overflowing septic tank, some shopkeepers and locals have filed a complaint with the Directorate of Food & Drugs Administration and other officials.
In their complaint, the aggrieved shopkeepers and locals have said the sewage water has been overflow around their shops, leading to loss in business due to the stench outside the shops.
They have also stated that there are two bars and restaurants functioning in an unhygienic condition as the overflowing septic tank is behind one restaurant and in front of the other restaurant.
“I requested a society committee member to take corrective action as I have developed health problems and am taking medication, while my business is getting effected,” said Ganraj Kabir, one shopkeeper.
“Instead of attending to the problem, she threatened me and said that I should either clear my unpaid dues or else, she would lock my shops. I told her that I would pay all dues only after all the stench is removed from the area,” Kabir added.
The shopkeepers have pointed out that the septic tanks overflowing from the society building hhas been flowing on the road, making it difficult for people to walk on the road.
The sewage water then flows into a storm water drain and into the Quepem-Paroda Irrigation Canal, which could lead to problems for the farmers.
When contacted, Quepem Municipal Council Engineer Nitin Kotharkar said he was unaware of the present condition, but assured to send a market inspector to ascertain the situation.
“The QMC had earlier served a notice to the society on the same issue and the society had given us a letter of compliance and said the issue was resolved,” said Kotharkar.
