Paliancar calls for ban on LED fishing

Says Central Govt must have a policy to regulate fishing

Fisheries Minister Vinod Paliencar chaired a meeting on Wednesday to advocate ban on LED light fishing outside territorial Waters of coastal states. Noting that there is no provision to regulate fishing outside 12 nautical miles, as it is within the jurisdiction of Central Government, the minister stated that the Central government draw up a uniform policy to ban LED fishing beyond 12 nautical miles. Paliencar said that he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the issue. While acting upon LED fishing, the government is also considering amending Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1980 aiming to conserve fisheries resources

MARGAO A group of contract labourers working for a factory in the Cuncolim Industrial estate has cried foul after they were not paid their wages for the last two months. They have threatened to stage a dharna and hunger strike if the Cuncolim police and the office of Labour Commissioner fails to come to their rescue.
