The capital city witnessed a strong show of public resistance as residents and activists gathered at the Institute Menezes Braganza hall to voice opposition to the entry of a new casino vessel into the Mandovi River.
The meeting, attended by Panjimites and citizens from across Goa, culminated in the passing of several resolutions demanding immediate government action to eventually shut down the industry.
The focal point of the protest was the proposed arrival of the Deltin casino vessel, a massive 112-metre-long and 30-metre-high ship.
Speakers at the meeting argued that such mega vessels would irreversibly damage the fragile marine ecosystem of the Mandovi, especially if dredging and other river works were undertaken to accommodate them.
Environmental concerns dominated the discussion, with participants stressing that the river’s biodiversity and heritage value must be protected from commercial exploitation.
Beyond ecological issues, the gathering also raised cultural and social objections. Many citizens expressed dismay at the government’s continued promotion of Goa as a gambling hub, warning that the capital city risks being branded a “sin city.”
Instead, they urged authorities to reposition Goa as a family-friendly tourism destination, highlighting its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and traditional hospitality.
Speakers emphasized that the issue was not merely about one vessel but about the larger trajectory of Goa’s tourism policy.
They argued that prioritizing casinos undermines sustainable development and erodes the State’s cultural identity.
The demand for a rehabilitation plan for casino workers reflected the gathering’s attempt to balance environmental and social concerns, ensuring livelihoods are protected while steering Goa toward a more responsible tourism model.
The meeting ended with a call for collective civic action, urging citizens to remain vigilant and united in their opposition to the casinos even as the organizers vowed to continue pressing the government until concrete steps are taken to safeguard the Mandovi river and redefine Goa’s image.
